Moscow: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that he expects the Group of Seven (G7) to follow Britain’s lead in imposing sanctions against Russia. It is noteworthy that Sunak had announced a ban on the import of diamonds from Russia on Friday. The British sanctions also include a $4 billion seal on the diamond export market. Meanwhile, European Council President Charles Michel said ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, that the EU plans to do the same.
Sunak said, that we are talking with our allies and I hope that other countries will do the same, as Britain has done in the last year regarding Russia. Whether it is about providing resources to Ukraine or sanctions against Russia. We have seen other countries partner with us. Ultimately, sanctions are more effective when they are done in a coordinated manner and I hope we see that here.
Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC) spokesman Tom Ness said on Friday that the G7 ban on Russian diamonds will have negligible impact on the diamond trade in London, but the market in the Belgian city of Antwerp will be hit hard. The 7 summit is being held in Hiroshima from May 19 to 21 and the main issues are the Ukraine conflict, economic security, green investment and development of the Indo-Pacific region.
